Americani del 72° Gruppo IT

Nel 1964 alla S.E.T.A.F. (South Europe Tactical Air Force, che aveva lo scopo di "provvedere alla consulenza ed assistenza dell’artiglieria italiana da campo e delle unità di difesa aerea", fu assegnato il 559th U.S.A.A.G. – United States Army Artillery Group, dal quale dipendevano il 69th Ordnance Company di stanza a Longare, con il compito di effettuare la manutenzione delle bombe atomiche e il 28th U.S.A.F.A.D. - United States Army Field Artillery Detachment, con il compito della difesa fisica delle bombe. Nel 1965 la sede della S.E.TA.F. fu definitivamente spostata nella Caserma “Carlo Ederle” a Vicenza. A Bovolone fu distaccato, agli inizi del 1964, un drappello composto da circa 30 unità, il 3° team del 31° Distaccamento che operò fino al 30 giugno 1976. Dopo questa data, a seguito di una ristrutturazione intervenuta per la soppressione di alcuni gruppi IT, assunse il nominativo di 2° Team del 47° Distaccamento. Il Team di custodia fu sciolto nel giugno del 1988. Gli ultimi americani lasciarono la base di Bovolone nell'autunno successivo. Il motto del reparto era "Spina Frontis" e l'insegna mostrata in figura. I colori rosso e giallo sono quelli dell'Artiglieria americana, mentre i tre fiori di giglio rappresentano le citazioni d'onore ricevute durante il servizio in Francia nella Seconda Guerra Mondiale. I due coltelli ricurvi per le citazioni d'onore ricevute invece in Germania.

La fascia nera simula una sezione di una canna di cannone. La punta del palo giallo rappresenta un missile guidato. Il distintivo fu originalmente approvato per il 559° Gruppo di Artiglieria da campagna il 15 marzo 1956. Fu poi modificato il 4 maggio 1956. Nuovamente ridisegnato per riflettere il cambio della denominazione del reparto in 559° Gruppo Artiglieria "Missili" da campagna l'11 settembre 1956. L'insegna fu abrogata il 3 aprile 1963 e reintrodotta e ridisegnata per il 559° Gruppo Artiglieria dell'Esercito degli Stati Uniti il 7 settembre 1967.Sul sito web "Ed's Nike Missile", alcuni soldati americani che hanno prestato servizio a Bovolone ricordano:

I was promoted to Sgt.5 and was in charge of the platoon. worked in the capacity of Sgt. of the guard. Had a real good time while serving overseas. I wanted to transfer to the the 101st Airborne Unit, but I had an accident and was let go.

I spent many more year's in Italy as a 29V microwave maintenance chief at Mt.Calvarina, Conselve, Ceggia, Oderzo, and Coltano. I retired from the army in 1990. I was with the 54th Signal Co. in Vicenza. Miss Italy, still call friends and alumi in Italy. Arrivederci.
