The Great Air Robbery

A band of aeroplane robbers, led by Van Arland (Ray Ripley), plan to steal $20,000 in gold, which is meant to be delivered to the Washington mint. But they weren't counting on the talents of aviator Larry Cassidy (Lieutenant Omar L. Locklear) of the U.S. mail service. Cassidy and another aviator, Wallie Mason (Allan Forrest), are tricked into revealing the air route, and Van Arland manages to fly off with the gold and the girl. But Cassidy pursues them and climbs a rope ladder from his plane to the villain's in mid-air. He captures Van Arland without much further ado and saves the day. This film was made in the days when flying was new and aviators were almost as glamorous as astronauts are today, but that doesn't mean that Universal Studios spent any extra money on it. Basically it was built around the one trick of having Locklear leap from one plane to another, and much of the other aerial footage comes from newsreels.

Hell's Angels

Hell's Angels  is well-known for Howard Hughes' high-cost direction and 18-year-old blonde bombshell Jean Harlow's first major role and big break into film, and the stunning aerial footage (e.g., authentic-looking dogfights). It was the costliest film ever made until Gone With the Wind .  It is the contrasting story of two brothers (one good and one bad), Roy (James Hall) and Monte Rutledge (Ben Lyon) respectively, who leave Oxford and join in the British Royal Flying Corps at the beginning of World War I. Roy, falls in love with Helen (Jean Harlow), a sexy, voluptuous, platinum blonde.

The Last Flight

Cary, Shep, Bill, and Francis are pilots during World War I. Cary and Shep's plane is shot down, and they barely survive; they're released from the hospital on Armistice Day, damaged both physically and psychologically. The four friends, haunted by the devastation of the war, head to Paris instead of home, where they meet Nikki, an eccentric and wealthy young woman. Nikki is drawn to Cary, and the five friends--tagged by the boorish reporter, Frink--drink their way from Paris to Lisbon. Few of these members of the "lost generation" make it out of their travels intact.

The picture opens with three young kids, OConnor, Weidler, and Cook, flying a kite. Then we hear about the Wright Brothers and their successful flight at Kitty Hawk, followed by a scene with Abel, a reporter, as he attempts to fly and becomes the first air casualty, perishing in a fiery crash. Time passes and the three children grow up to become MacMurray, Campbell, and Milland. MacMurray marries Campbell, they have a child, and Milland, despite the fact that he has always loved Campbell, remains a pal to the two. With Devine around as an airplane mechanic (and to provide laughs), the careers of the three are traced until MacMurray takes off to help the Chinese in their war with the Japanese.  In the end, MacMurray loses his life in his desire to help the Chinese, and Milland moves in to take his place.

Kato Hayabusa Sentotai

War-time Japan produced a number of excellent motion pictures regarding its military. One of those films, a product of the Toho Motion Picture Company, was the 1944 production of 'Kato Hayabusa Sentotai' (Kato's Perigrin Falcon Squadron). Col. Kato was indeed a real officer serving with the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force in Southeast Asia...an officer highly respected by his pilots for his fairness and excellent flying ability. The aircraft he and his men flew was the Nakajima Ki-43 'Hayabusa' fighter. One of the many highlights of the production was the use of the actual type aircraft used by the Kato squadron. Along with the realistic action, the acting and direction were superb. I would say that this feature is above par should it be compared with other films of this type including those produced in the United States and Europe. The motion picture was shot in black and white, and is about two hours in length.

Malta Story is a 1953 British war film, directed by Brian Desmond Hurst, which is based on the heroic air defence of Malta during the Siege of Malta in the Second World War. The film uses real and unique footage of the locations at which the battles were fought and includes a love story between a RAF pilot and a Maltese girl, as well as the anticipated execution of her brother, caught as an Italian spy. The character of "Peter Ross" is apparently loosely based on that of Adrian Warburton.

Squadron Leader Quint Munroe, an RAF pilot in World War II, has a hard time dealing with the presumed death in action of fellow Sq. Leader David 'Scotty' Scott, whose family practically raised him when he was orphaned, so they were like brothers. RAF Air Commodore Hufford has a crucial task for Quint, who is no longer serving in the squadron: a reconnaissance flight over the château de Charlon, a castle in occupied France, where the Nazis are probably developing a new generation of flying bombs; the defenses are indeed suspiciously tight. When analyzed, the photos show the castle grounds harbor an underground launching tunnel, and Quint gets a nearly impossible precision top-secret mission: select and train a team in only 10 days, when the French underground believes the first launch is planned, to 'aim' a new type of bouncing bomb into the tunnel, to blow up the whole Luftwaffe install ation. Quint falls in love with Scotty's young widow Beth Scott, whose crippled brother, Flight Lieutenant Douglas Shelton, is on his team. After the Gestapo catches and tortures a French underground member, the Luftwaffe drops a film showing the castle being filled with captured RAF men, one of which is, to Quint and Doug's shock, Scotty, not dead after all, causing a dilemma for which Quint presents an even more daring solution, to be prepared in a few days...
